Unlimited hiking across the High Fens
What a hiking treat! Two days of hiking on the recently opened (certified as Leading Quality Trail Best of Europe) Fens Trilogy through the east of Belgium, then the adventurous crossing of the High Fens. Finally, two hiking days on the premium hiking classic Eifelsteig. Are you getting hiking fever yet?
From the Dreiländerpunkt on the Vaalserberg in the venerable Limburg Reichswald forest, you hike through the former mini or artificial state of Neutral Moresnet. Marvel at the curiosity that has lasted for more than a century, starting with the Congress of Vienna in 1815. Enjoy the lush green hedgerows along the Göhl, the "Emmaburg", the mighty railroad viaduct over the Göhl, the moated castles in the first overnight stop in Eynatten or the enchanting pottery village of Raeren. Then the history-rich clothmaking metropolis of Eupen, capital and seat of government of the German-speaking community of Belgium, pays you a visit. Let your gaze wander from the upper town to the east. You are walking on this green rampart! You follow the hill with its amber-colored water uphill. You climb through a wild valley up to Ternell House and conquer, uphill, downhill, the ridge of the Brackvenn. The path winds its way, partly on boardwalks, to the invisible German-Belgian border. Here you touch the Eifelsteig trail and head through the Monschau Heckenland to the medieval town of Monschau. With a culinary boost, you then start two days of hiking on the Eifelsteig to Kornelimünster at the gates of the cathedral city and burial place of Emperor Charlemagne in Aachen. First, the "Eifel view" from the 658 m high Steling beckons. Once again you touch the vastness of a primeval landscape that is thousands of years old, come across the history of the Reinartz farms and spend the night in Roetgen. The final stage shines with the lake-like Dreilägerbachtalsperre dam and reminds you once again of the unique upland moor flair as you pass through the Struffelt Heide. Soon after the Itertal viaduct, the historic old town of the end point in Aachen-Kornelimünster greets you.
Our tip: Complete your hiking tour with a guided tour of Aachen's historic old town. Let yourself be guided through narrow alleyways and across historic squares through the 2000-year-old history of Aachen. We will be happy to reserve discounted tickets for you to take part in a public tour of the old town on request.
