Ulmen maar-tunnel

Ulmen

The new Ulmen maar-tunnel connects the Jungferweiher Maar with the Ulmen maar and allows guests to experience millennia of earth history up close. The maar-tunnel can be imagined as a cave-like cross-section through a volcano. Walking through the narrow gallery, which is about 120 metres long, is a real experience, especially for young visitors. The effective lighting creates a mysterious atmosphere. The walls of the gallery allow visitors to dive deep into the earth's history: if you look closely, you can discover the numerous different sediment layers that bear witness to the region's volcanic past; or the glittering rock fragments that come from Lake Laach. In terms of geological history, the Ulmen maar-tunnel is thus a true treasure.

Anyone entering the tunnel on the side of the Jungferweiher lake will be amazed right from the start: an artistic graffiti adorns the entrance and illustrates the formation of the maars. Here, ice-cold water meets glowing red magma, cold meets heat, and discharges in a gigantic explosion.

Note on accessibility: The Ulmen maar-tunnel is barrier-free and accessible free of charge. However, it is only 70 cm wide at its narrowest point.

Tip:
Go on a digital journey through time with the Ulmen Discovery Tour. All you need is a smartphone: along the 3.7-kilometre-long tour, blue signs with QR codes point to 24 "pickpoints" - here you can experience Ulmen interactively! Behind the QR codes are short videos that breathe new life into old stories. The protagonists also blur the boundaries between reality and fiction. For example, what does the Ulmen castle jester or the knight Heinrich von der Burg have to say? What does Harry Haubentaucher report about the flora and fauna of the Jungferweiher and what does the gargoyle talk about? The stories allow young and old to immerse themselves in Ulmen's past and present. The audio-visual experience takes visitors to the Ulmen maar, the maiden pond and through the new maar gallery. Finally, a digital quiz awaits visitors at Ulmen Castle, aimed primarily at children. Those who answer all the questions correctly can look forward to a special souvenir from Ulmen.

You can join the tour at any point. The entire tour, including walking time and pickpoints, takes approx. 2.5 hours. You can also split up the tour and continue at a later time.

Discover Ulmen barrier-free
The entire circular route around the Jungferweiher pond is barrier-free. In addition, some pickpoints are also designed to be accessible, so that the content can also be experienced in easy language or with translation into sign language.
